Our Pediatric Eye Care Starts With a Comprehensive Eye Examination

Pediatric Ophthalmology Associates, Inc., with offices in Columbus, Dublin, and Westerville, OH, specializes in diagnosing and treating eye problems in children from infants to 18-year-olds. We provide comprehensive eye exams, diagnose and treat eye conditions, and prescribe eyeglasses if necessary. We can also perform eye surgery if needed. We understand that your child is unique, and so is our approach to eye care. Whether your child was referred to our office for a medical condition such as crossing or wandering (strabismus), “lazy eye” (amblyopia), blocked tear ducts, or a failed vision screening, every new patient exam begins with a comprehensive medical evaluation.

Due to our expertise in strabismus, our physicians also treat and manage eye misalignment problems in adults. Referrals are required for adult patients, as appointments are limited. Adult patients should expect 2 hour exams, which will include in-depth sensorimotor evaluations and ancillary testing such as a synoptophore exam. We do not routinely dilate adult patients, but if you are experiencing double vision, please bring a driver.

New Patient Eye Examinations

For most initial eye examinations, eye drops will be used to dilate (temporarily enlarge) your child’s pupils. This ensures a more accurate and complete exam and permits our doctor to examine the retina, blood vessels of the eye, and the optic nerve. These drops will cause the pupil to appear larger than normal and may cause blurriness and light sensitivity. Usually, the effects of the drops are gone within 24 hours, although the blurriness and light sensitivity are much reduced within several hours. Because a comprehensive eye examination requires more time than a well-child visit, please allow two and a half hours for a new patient exam.

What to Expect at a Pediatric Eye Exam

  • Medical history review: We review the child’s medical history, including any eye problems, injuries, or surgeries.
  • Visual acuity test: The child’s visual acuity is measured using eye charts, pictures, or letters.
  • Eye alignment test: Our doctor checks if the child’s eyes align and work together correctly.
  • Refraction assessment: This test measures the child’s prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses.
  • Eye health evaluation: Our doctor examines the child’s eyes for any signs of eye diseases or conditions.
  • Dilated eye exam: Our doctor uses eye drops to dilate the child’s pupils and examine the retina and optic nerve.
  • Additional tests: Depending on the child’s age and condition, our doctor may perform further tests, such as visual field testing, electroretinography, optical coherence tomography, color vision testing, or an eye pressure assesment.
